Ethical Standards

  • Disclosure of conflicts of interest
  • Compliance with ethical standards for research involving human subjects (where applicable)

AI Policy

No submissions written wholly or in part by AI. We only accept AI use in very limited ways due to the poor quality of LLM prose and the increased risk of LLM plagiarism.

No need to polish submissions using AI. We seek a human style of writing with a tone that is unique and special rather than “smoothed” by AI. We seek to encourage an author’s unique voice and perspective rather than one polished or positioned by a machine.

No uploading feedback on drafts or correspondence through AI. Our work is special to us and is an intellectual property we are sharing with authors for their benefit, not for the benefit of training a machine.

No need to use AI to revise your article in whole or in part after receiving editorial feedback. Similar to the above, we do not want our work used for AI training nor for you to use it to edit the structure or grammar of your paper.

SAUCE editors will not upload any of your work to AI. We do not use AI to provide feedback, edit, or make copy edits.

Submission Process

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to the Editor-In-Chief and submissions must include:

  • Manuscript file (anonymous for peer review, if applicable)
  • Separate title page
  • Brief author bio
  • Any supplementary materials

Peer Review

Research articles and most essays undergo double-blind peer review. Other submission types (e.g., artwork, reviews) may be evaluated by the editorial team. Authors may be asked to revise submissions based on reviewer feedback.

Reasons a manuscript may be rejected include:

  • Total lack of thesis or valid research question or hypothesis.
  • Clear objective errors in method, data, or analysis.
  • Unoriginal, is plagiarized, is a duplication of a previous publication or uses AI/LLMs egregiously.
  • Unreadable or ungrammatical presentation of ideas that prevent a rigorous and efficient review.
  • Violates common ethics of privacy protection or needs ethical review board approval.
  • References are clearly biased (self-citation, singular school of thought) or are too old to reflect the current status of knowledge in the field.
  • Conclusions that are misleading or could pose a public health threat.
Note: A list of reviewers is named on the publication issue of the work that they endorse to acknowledge their contribution, without specifying which work they reviewed to preserve some anonymity.

Authors retain copyright of their work but grant the journal a license to publish. Specific licensing terms (e.g., open access, Creative Commons) will be specified upon acceptance.

Editorial Discretion

The editorial team reserves the right to:

  • Desk-reject submissions that fall outside the journal’s scope
  • Request revisions prior to peer review
  • Make minor editorial changes for clarity and consistency
